CUSK LogoOn January 7, 2010, New Jersey State Senator Sean T. Kean betrayed a huge number of New Jersey residents, including many of his own Monmouth County constituents, by voting against the Freedom of Religion and Equality in Civil Marriage Act (S-1967). The bill was defeated by a vote of 14-20.

The towns making up Senator Kean's 11th Legislative District boast some of the largest numbers of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) residents in the Garden State. This fact is not lost on Senator Kean, who noted the many neighborhood improvements undertaken by his LGBT constituents in his pre-vote comments from the floor of the Senate on January 7—immediately before stating, hypocritically and with disdain, that he would not vote to pass the bill.

Senator Kean's speech (video below) and vote against S-1967 has enraged many of his LGBT and straight constituents who hoped to see second-class civil unions give way to full-fledged marriage equality.

The Committee to Unseat Sean Kean (CUSK) was formed out of this anger. We will continue to mobilize District 11's vast number of marriage equality supporters. Should Senator Kean run for reelection, we will provide nonpartisan support to contenders who will fight for marriage equality in the New Jersey State Senate. We will also collaborate with other political and apolitical groups who do not see marriage equality and the other key issues facing District 11 constituents and the State of New Jersey as mutually exclusive.

Together, we will unseat Sean Kean in November 2011.
